How Is Scrap Gold Priced?
Scrap gold is priced based on two factors: karat (gold purity) and weight. The gold spot price, traded on the COMEX futures exchange and quoted per troy ounce, is the starting point. Your payout is calculated by multiplying your gold’s weight in troy ounces by its purity percentage by a percentage of the spot price. If there’s no stamp, it may be gold-filled, gold-plated, or another metal entirely. What Is the Difference Between Gold-Filled and Solid Gold?
Gold-filled jewelry has a thick layer of gold bonded to a base metal core — typically marked GF or 1/20 14K GF. Gold-plated has a very thin gold layer electroplated over base metal. Neither is solid gold, and neither pays at the same rate as solid scrap gold. We test and identify all three and price accordingly.
