What You Need to Know Before Selling Gold Bullion in NYC
Gold bullion refers to gold in its investment-grade form — bars, coins, and rounds produced by recognized mints and refineries to a certified purity standard, typically 99.9% or 99.99% fine gold. Unlike jewelry, bullion’s value is almost entirely determined by its gold content and the live spot price.
How Is Gold Bullion Priced?
Gold bullion is priced per troy ounce, based on the spot price traded on the COMEX futures exchange and the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). The spot price fluctuates continuously during market hours. Your payout at Buyers of New York is calculated directly from today’s live spot — not a fixed weekly rate that may lag the market by days.
Does the Refinery Matter?
Yes, significantly. LBMA-accredited refineries — PAMP Suisse, Credit Suisse, Valcambi, Johnson Matthey, Perth Mint — command higher premiums because their bars are universally recognized, easily authenticated, and highly liquid. A generic pour bar with no refinery branding may trade at or close to spot, while an LBMA bar with assay card can command a meaningful premium above spot. We assess each piece individually.
Do Assay Cards and Packaging Matter?
Assay card packaging (the sealed blister pack with certificate) does add value, particularly for PAMP and Credit Suisse bars. An unopened PAMP 1oz bar in assay card is worth more than the same bar removed from packaging, because the assay card provides independent verification of authenticity and purity. That said, we buy bars with and without packaging — we use XRF analysis to verify regardless.
Bullion Coins vs. Bars: Which Pays More?
Recognized bullion coins — American Gold Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, Krugerrands, Philharmonics — often carry a slight premium over generic bars due to their government backing, legal tender status, and high liquidity. Some coins also carry numismatic value beyond their gold content, particularly older dates and special editions. We assess numismatic premium separately from melt value.
