How Much Is My Gold Worth in NYC? A Real Answer from a Diamond District Buyer

Buyers of New York · August 17, 2026 · 5 min read

It is the question every seller has before they walk in anywhere: how much is my gold actually worth? Not the number the pawn shop quotes, not the estimate from a mall kiosk, not a guess based on something you read online. The real number, calculated against the actual market.

At Buyers of New York in Manhattan’s Diamond District at 30 W. 47th Street, Suite 8006, near Rockefeller Center, we have been answering this question honestly since 1993. Here is exactly how gold is priced, what determines your payout, and why the numbers vary so dramatically depending on where you sell gold in NYC.

The Gold Price Formula — There Is Only One Right Way to Calculate It

Gold value comes down to three inputs and one formula. Nothing else. Any buyer who cannot show you this math on the spot is either guessing or hiding something.

Input 1: Weight. Gold is measured in troy ounces. One troy ounce equals 31.1 grams. If your ring weighs 5 grams, that is 5 ÷ 31.1 = 0.1608 troy ounces. Weight is determined by a calibrated scale. We use DCA-certified scales at Buyers of New York — certified by the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs, which means the measurement is legally accurate.

Input 2: Purity. The karat stamp tells you what percentage of the piece is pure gold. 10K = 41.7% gold. 14K = 58.5% gold. 18K = 75% gold. 22K = 91.7% gold. 24K = 99.9% gold. We confirm karat using acid testing or XRF analysis — not by taking your word for the stamp, and not by guessing based on appearance.

Input 3: Spot Price. The live gold spot price is what gold trades at on the commodity exchanges right now. It changes constantly. At Buyers of New York, we pull the live spot price at the time of your visit and show you the number we are using. It is the same number you can look up on any financial site.

The formula: Weight in troy oz × purity × spot price = gold content value. We pay a competitive percentage of that number based on current market conditions and quantity.

Why You Got a Different Number Somewhere Else

If you have already been to another buyer in NYC and received a number that felt low, it is almost always one of three things. They used a lower spot price than the current market rate. They underestimated your karat — calling 18K as 14K, or 14K as 10K. Or their payout percentage was simply low because their business model requires it.

Pawn shops and mall kiosks operate at wide margins. They need to because they resell to wholesalers or refiners who take their own cut. The seller ends up at the end of a chain of margins. We eliminate that chain entirely.

What Makes Gold Worth More Than Melt

Standard jewelry sold for scrap is priced at melt value — the formula above. But certain gold items carry premiums above melt that can be significant.

Designer brand pieces. A Cartier Love bracelet in 18K gold is worth more than its gold content. The brand premium is real and substantial. We assess Cartier, Tiffany, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, and other luxury brands for full designer value above melt. Never sell a recognizable designer piece to a buyer who treats it as scrap gold.

Numismatic gold coins. A $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle contains 0.9675 oz of gold, but its collector value as a pre-1933 US coin typically exceeds that melt value significantly depending on date, mint mark, and condition. We assess every pre-1933 US gold coin individually and pay numismatic value when it exceeds melt.

PCGS and NGC certified coins. A gold coin graded MS-70 by PCGS or NGC trades at a premium that can be multiples of melt value for popular issues. We reference current population reports and recent auction results for certified pieces and pay full grade premiums.

What to Expect from 14K Gold Right Now

At current gold spot prices above $4,500 per troy ounce, a single troy ounce of 14K gold contains over $2,600 in gold content. A typical 14K gold ring weighing 4 to 6 grams is worth between $340 and $510 in gold content at these prices. A 14K gold chain weighing 15 grams is worth over $1,250. These are real numbers at real prices — numbers that pawn shops frequently obscure by quoting in pennyweights without explaining the conversion, or by using spot prices from days or weeks ago.

At Buyers of New York, the price we use is live. The weight is certified. The karat is tested. The math is shown. The offer is made in front of you.
