Pre-1964 US Silver Coins

NYC’s Best Price for Junk Silver Coins

Pre-1964 US silver coins — commonly called “junk silver” — are among the most actively traded silver products in the world. Despite the nickname, there’s nothing junk about them. They contain real 90% silver and trade at prices directly tied to the live silver spot market.

Buyers of New York has been buying junk silver coins in the Diamond District since 1993. We pay live spot-based pricing on every denomination — Morgan Dollars, Peace Dollars, Walking Liberty halves, Franklin halves, Washington quarters, Mercury dimes, Roosevelt dimes, and Barber coins. Individual coins, rolls, bags, and large collections all welcome.

We also assess key-date and rare coins for numismatic premium above melt. Don’t melt a rare-date Morgan or a key-date Barber quarter without getting a proper assessment first — the collector value can be multiples of the silver content.

“A $1,000 face value bag of pre-1964 junk silver contains approximately 715 troy ounces of actual silver — worth significantly more than its face value. At current silver prices, we pay market rates based on real silver content, not a lowball number.”

Buyers of New York — Diamond District, NYC

The term “junk silver” refers to pre-1965 US coins minted with 90% silver content that have no significant numismatic or collector value beyond their silver melt value. This includes Morgan Dollars, Peace Dollars, Walking Liberty halves, Franklin halves, Washington quarters, Mercury dimes, and Roosevelt dimes (1964 and earlier).

These coins were taken out of circulation when the US switched to copper-nickel clad coinage in 1965. The silver content is precisely known and standardized — making them easy to price and trade based purely on the live silver spot price.

A $1,000 face value bag (1,000 silver dollars, 4,000 quarters, 10,000 dimes, or any combination) contains approximately 715 troy ounces of silver. This is the standard trading unit for junk silver in the dealer market.

How we price them: Silver content × current spot price × our payout percentage. We show you exactly what spot price we’re using and how we calculated your offer before you accept anything.

Not all pre-1964 coins are pure junk silver. Certain dates and mint marks carry significant collector premiums above melt value. If you have any of the following, make sure to get a proper numismatic assessment before selling for melt:

  • Morgan Dollars — 1893-S, 1895 (Proof only), 1889-CC, 1879-CC, 1903-O, 1884-S, 1892-S
  • Peace Dollars — 1921 (High Relief), 1928, 1934-S, 1935-S
  • Walking Liberty Halves — 1916-S, 1917-D obverse, 1919-D, 1921
  • Mercury Dimes — 1916-D (rarest), 1921, 1921-D, 1931-D, 1931-S
  • Barber Coins — Most Barber quarters and dimes carry premiums above melt regardless of date

Common Questions

Selling Junk Silver Coins — What You Need to Know

Junk silver refers to pre-1965 US coins minted with 90% silver content that have no significant numismatic (collector) value above their silver content. This includes Morgan Dollars, Peace Dollars, Walking Liberty halves, Franklin halves, Washington quarters, Mercury dimes, and Roosevelt dimes dated 1964 and earlier. Despite the name, they’re valuable investment silver products actively traded worldwide.
A standard $1,000 face value bag of 90% US silver coins contains approximately 715 troy ounces of actual silver. This is based on the 90% silver content of the coins minus wear adjustment. A $1,000 face bag consists of 1,000 silver dollars, or 4,000 quarters, or 10,000 dimes, or any combination totaling $1,000 in face value.
We use the current live silver spot price and multiply it by the known silver content of each coin type. For example, a Morgan Dollar contains 0.7735 troy ounces of silver. At $30/oz spot, that’s approximately $23.20 in silver content. We pay a percentage of that based on current market conditions and quantity. We show you the spot price and calculation before you accept anything.
Yes. War Nickels (1942–1945) were minted with 35% silver due to wartime nickel rationing. They’re identifiable by the large mint mark on the reverse above Monticello. Each contains 0.0563 troy ounces of silver. We buy them at 35% of silver spot per coin.
Bring them in and we’ll assess every coin. Key factors are date, mint mark, and condition. Notable key dates include the 1916-D Mercury Dime, the 1893-S and 1895 Morgan Dollars, the 1916-S Walking Liberty Half, and most Barber series coins. A coin that looks ordinary may be worth multiples of melt — we identify these and pay collector value accordingly.
Yes. Canadian silver coins dated 1967 and earlier contain 80% silver (with some 1967 issues at 50%). We buy Canadian Dollars, Half Dollars, Quarters, and Dimes at 80% of current silver spot per coin, priced by actual silver content. 80% Canadian Proof-Like sets are also purchased.
Same day. Accept the offer and receive cash or same-day wire immediately. Most coin evaluations complete in 10–20 minutes depending on quantity. Walk in from anywhere in Manhattan, walk out with cash.
